Example: With a normal force of 100 N and a coefficient of friction of 0.4, the friction force is 40 N.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculating static or kinetic friction? The formula f = μN applies to whichever coefficient you enter, so the result represents static friction if you use a static coefficient or kinetic friction if you use a kinetic one — the calculator itself doesn't distinguish the two.

Does the normal force always equal the object's weight? Only on a flat horizontal surface; on an incline or when other vertical forces are involved, the normal force is less than the full weight, so you need to compute it separately before entering it here.
