Understanding the result

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the percentage change simply the difference between the two rates? Appreciation is calculated as (new − old) / old, a relative change, so the same absolute move produces a different percentage depending on the starting rate — a move from 1.10 to 1.21 is 10%, but the same 0.11 move from 2.00 to 2.11 is only 5.5%.

Does a positive result always mean the currency got stronger? It means the exchange rate rose as you defined it, but whether that's 'stronger' depends on which currency is the base; if the rate is quoted as foreign-per-domestic, a rise means the domestic currency weakened, not strengthened.
