EV Charging Cost Calculator
Estimate what it costs to charge an electric vehicle, accounting for charger losses via charging efficiency.
Inputs explained
- Battery capacity (kWh) — The EV's usable battery size in kilowatt-hours. Example: 60.
- Charge from (%) — The battery percentage you start charging at. Example: 20.
- Charge to (%) — The battery percentage you charge up to. Example: 80.
- Electricity price (per kWh) — What you pay per kilowatt-hour of electricity. Example: 0.15.
- Charging efficiency (%) — How much grid energy actually reaches the battery — typically about 90% for AC charging.

Understanding the result
Example: Charging a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% at $0.15/kWh with 90% efficiency draws 40 kWh from the grid and costs $6.00.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the energy drawn from the grid more than what the battery actually gains? Charging isn't perfectly efficient — some energy is lost as heat in the charger and battery — so the efficiency percentage inflates the grid draw above the raw battery kWh added; at 90% efficiency, charging 36 kWh into the battery requires 40 kWh from the wall.
Does a higher-powered charger change the total cost? No, charger power (kW) affects how fast the charge happens, not how much energy or money it costs — cost depends only on the kWh drawn from the grid and the price per kWh, not the charging speed.
Is the EV Charging Cost Calculator free to use? Yes — it is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no usage limits. You can use it as often as you need.
Is my data private? Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — the values you enter are never sent to our servers, stored or shared with anyone.
What information do I need? Just the following: Battery capacity (kWh), Charge from (%), Charge to (%), Electricity price (per kWh), Charging efficiency (%). Each field includes a hint explaining exactly what to enter.
Can I use it on my phone? Yes — the tool is fully responsive and works on any device, and the same calculator is available in the EasyWorkCalcs mobile app.
