Example: A 20 × 15 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, average insulation, a moderate climate, and average sun needs about 7,500 BTU/hr — roughly a 1-ton unit.

Why does sun exposure affect the BTU estimate as much as room size? A room with heavy west or south-facing sun exposure gains substantial extra heat through windows during the day, which the calculator factors in as an added cooling load on top of the base square-footage figure.
Is the BTU result exact enough to buy a unit without a professional load calculation? No — this gives a reasonable ballpark for sizing discussions, but a proper Manual J load calculation accounts for window count and orientation, air leakage, and local climate data in more detail than this simplified estimate.
