Frequently asked questions
Why does protein lower the points score while saturated fat and sugar raise it? The formula subtracts a small protein term (protein×3/33) because protein is treated as a favorable nutrient, while saturated fat and sugar are weighted positively (added) because the points system is designed to discourage foods high in those two nutrients.
Can the points score go negative for very high-protein, low-fat foods? No, the calculator floors the result at zero, so foods with enough protein to mathematically produce a negative score are simply reported as 0 points rather than a negative number.
