Hooke's Law Calculator

Compute spring force from spring constant and displacement.

Hooke's Law Calculator

Compute the restoring force of a spring using Hooke's law, F = kx, along with the elastic potential energy stored at that displacement.

Inputs explained

  • Spring constant (N/m) The stiffness of the spring, in newtons per metre.
  • Displacement (m) How far the spring is stretched or compressed from its rest length, in metres.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the fields above — each input has a hint describing exactly what to enter
  2. Press Calculate to get your result instantly, right on this page
  3. Copy the result, save the tool to favorites, or share and embed it anywhere

Understanding the result

Example: A spring with k = 200 N/m stretched 0.1 m exerts a force of 20 N and stores 1 joule of elastic energy.

Frequently asked questions

Why does doubling the displacement more than double the stored energy? Force follows F = kx and scales linearly with displacement, but elastic potential energy follows E = ½kx² and scales with the square of displacement, so doubling x quadruples the stored energy.

Does Hooke's law apply to any amount of stretch? No, F = kx is only accurate within a spring's elastic limit; stretch it too far and the spring deforms permanently, so the calculator's result assumes you're still within that linear range.

Is the Hooke's Law Calculator free to use? Yes — it is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no usage limits. You can use it as often as you need.

Is my data private? Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — the values you enter are never sent to our servers, stored or shared with anyone.

What information do I need? Just the following: Spring constant (N/m), Displacement (m). Each field includes a hint explaining exactly what to enter.

Can I use it on my phone? Yes — the tool is fully responsive and works on any device, and the same calculator is available in the EasyWorkCalcs mobile app.
