How is a capsule's total length different from the cylinder height I enter? The cylinder (side) height is only the straight middle section; the total length adds the two hemispherical caps on each end, so total length equals the cylinder height plus twice the radius.
Why does this shape use two hemisphere caps instead of one full sphere? A capsule (spherocylinder) has a rounded end at both sides of the cylinder, and each rounded end is a hemisphere; together the two hemispheres are equivalent to one full sphere's worth of volume and surface area.
