Example: A raw 64 out of 100 becomes 80 under the square-root curve: √(64/100) × 100 = 80.

How does the square-root curve differ from just adding flat points? The square-root curve boosts lower scores proportionally more than higher ones (a 64 becomes 80, an 81 becomes 90), while adding flat points raises every score by the same fixed amount regardless of where it started.
What does the highest-score-in-class method do to the top student's grade? It rescales every score so that the highest score in the class becomes 100%, meaning the top student's grade is set to 100 and everyone else's score is scaled up proportionally relative to that.
