Understanding the result
Example: A $40 cost with a 50% markup gives a $60 selling price, $20 profit, and a 33.33% margin.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't a 50% markup the same as a 50% margin? Markup is calculated on cost (profit ÷ cost) while margin is calculated on selling price (profit ÷ price), so a 50% markup on a $40 cost gives $60 price but only a 33.33% margin, not 50%.
If I want a specific profit margin, can I just enter that as the markup? No — entering your target margin percentage into the markup field will give you too low a price; you'd need to convert margin to the equivalent markup first (margin / (1 − margin)) to get the right selling price.
