What does each letter in FOIL actually correspond to in the output? First multiplies the two leading terms (a×c), Outer multiplies the outermost terms (a×d), Inner multiplies the innermost terms (b×c), and Last multiplies the two constant terms (b×d), which are then combined into the middle term.

Does FOIL work if a binomial has a negative coefficient? Yes, negative values for a, b, c, or d are handled normally; the sign just carries through each of the four partial products before they're combined.
