Why do women need a hip measurement but men don't? The U.S. Army circumference formula uses different equations by sex: the male version relies on waist and neck alone, while the female version adds hip circumference because fat distribution patterns differ enough between sexes that the male formula isn't accurate for women.

Tape-measure methods like this one are less precise than lab methods such as DEXA or hydrostatic weighing, typically carrying a margin of error of a few percentage points, so it's best used for tracking relative change over time rather than an exact figure.
