Understanding the result
Example: For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 the quartiles are Q1 = 9.75, Q2 = 15.5, Q3 = 21.25, and the IQR is 11.5.
Frequently asked questions
What does linear interpolation mean for finding quartiles? Instead of picking an existing data point as the quartile, the calculator finds a fractional position in the sorted list and blends the two nearest values proportionally, which is why quartile results like 9.75 can fall between actual data points.
Is the interquartile range affected by outliers in my data? Much less than the full range is: the IQR (Q3 − Q1) only reflects the middle 50% of the data, so extreme high or low values don't shift it the way they would shift the min or max.
