Topsoil Calculator
Estimate how much topsoil you need, by volume and weight, to cover an area at a given depth.
Inputs explained
- Area to Cover (sq ft) — The size of the garden bed, lawn, or planting area.
- Desired Depth (in) — How deep a layer of topsoil you want to add.

Understanding the result
Example: A 200 sq ft garden bed at 4 inches deep needs about 2.5 cubic yards of topsoil.
Frequently asked questions
Why does depth matter so much to the final cubic yardage? Volume scales linearly with depth, so doubling the desired depth from 2 to 4 inches doubles the topsoil needed even though the area covered stays the same.
Should I subtract existing soil depth before calculating? Yes — this calculator gives the volume needed to add a layer of the depth you specify; if you're topping up rather than starting from bare ground, enter only the additional depth you want, not the total desired soil depth.
Is the Topsoil Calculator free to use? Yes — it is completely free, with no sign-up, no download and no usage limits. You can use it as often as you need.
Is my data private? Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — the values you enter are never sent to our servers, stored or shared with anyone.
What information do I need? Just the following: Area to Cover (sq ft), Desired Depth (in). Each field includes a hint explaining exactly what to enter.
Can I use it on my phone? Yes — the tool is fully responsive and works on any device, and the same calculator is available in the EasyWorkCalcs mobile app.
