Why does the calculator use the midpoint price instead of the bid or ask price to compute the percentage? The midpoint (average of bid and ask) is the standard reference point for spread percentage because it represents a neutral 'fair' price, avoiding the bias of anchoring the percentage to one side of the trade.
Does a small dollar spread always mean a low percentage spread? Not necessarily — a $0.50 spread is tiny on a $500 stock but significant on a $5 stock, so the same dollar spread can produce very different percentage spreads depending on the security's price level.
